Kabir Amari (they/them)
Kabir Amari is a nonbinary educator, trainer, impact strategist, and curriculum creator. For the past decade, they have devoted their professional life to the service of 2LGBTQIA+ students, employees, and families in educational institutions and other professional environments.
Kabir Amari earned a Bachelors degree in political science from Florida A&M University and a Masters of Science degree in Education from The Johns Hopkins University.
As a former classroom teacher in Title 1 schools exclusively, they became acutely aware of the need for educators to receive high-quality professional development around the experiences of diverse student populations.
After leaving the classroom, Kabir Amari started a career as a DEI facilitator and strategist.
Kabir Amari has facilitated more than 300 trainings in various school districts, universities, non profit organizations, corporations and governmental entities across the country on the importance of having an intersectional approach to the implementation of DEI. The topics of their trainings have ranged from providing guidance on navigating the legalities and policy guidance related to race, gender identity, disability and other protected identities, navigating the legalities and providing policy guidance related to transgender and nonbinary students in education, racial justice, disability justice, 2LGBTQIA+ sensitivity and inclusion, and intersectionality.
Kabir Amari has been recognized by various organizations for their work, including most recently by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. They selected as one of South Florida Gay News’ “Out 50”, a distinguished list recognizing openly LGBTQ individuals who make an impact in South Florida. Kabir Amari is also a recipient of the Bishop S.F. Makalani-Mahee award for Trans Equality for their work supporting transgender youth. In 2020, they were a finalist for the Educator of the Year Award from GLSEN.
Kabir Amari is a member of the National Planning Committee for the Stonewall National Education Project Symposium on LGBTQ+ youth in education, a member of the Steering Committee for the All Together Now Conference for Florida School district employees committed to supporting LGBTQ+ Youth, a Prism Board member for the Teach For America, a Board member for Trans Inclusive and a Board Member for Peace Academy Charter, the only charter school in Georgia with an afrocentric curriculum.
As a child, Kabir Amari’s gender expression was non-conformist. This sometimes caused friction as a child being raised in a Southern Baptist Christian family between Clayton County, GA and Tampa, FL. Kabir Amari grew to value the importance of carefully planned difficult conversations, and they devoted their professional life to finding meaningful methods of building bridges of understanding between conflicting parties.
Kabir Amari believes that with the right investment all places can be safe spaces.
